One day a man walked into a large department store in a small town in Canada to their repeated intercom announcements: “We have 30% off on all women’s jewelry between 1 and 3pm”.
The man looked around and found only a handful of customers in the store for the duration of his presence. The jewelry on sale hardly sold.
He wondered how this announcement of the spot deal reached possibly hundreds of women outside who perhaps were looking for similar jewelry elsewhere, maybe in stores where there were no sales, or online where they were perhaps more expensive than this local store deal.
It may be hard to believe, but countless consumers’ accounts confirm that there are cheaper merchandise in local stores than online, and more often than we can think of.
The man in the story happened to be a Software Engineer with a knack for problem solving.
And the problem was, not one, but multiple.
Local stores have deals, yet consumers are buying more and more online.
As a result, store merchants are losing sales, while consumers are missing out on better deals, direct product experience before purchase, social experience of shopping, and more.
Consumers are getting caught in the illusions of the images which drive online shopping, and thus ending up in frustrations when the products arrive, more often than we realize.
And yet local stores are going out of business in scores across the world, and dependent families are running out of livelihood options.
There are more losers than winners in the frenzy of online shopping for the myths and misconceptions around it.
In a few months, the store as cited above went out of business and downed its shutters for good.
And around the same time, tens and hundreds of other store closures in and around North America and elsewhere due to dwindling sales volume ushered the idea of a solution to the problem in the man’s mind, and he founded, how else to
better name it, but---
